Getting Around in Jakarta

jakarta-traffic

Jakarta has an extensive public transport network, but it can be frustrating to use because of the constant congestion. It’s very easy to get caught up in gridlock traffic any time of the day or night, and waste a lot of valuable time in the process. TransJakarta busway is the fastest option for getting around the city, although it’s still limited in range. The busway system connects most of the main shopping, entertainment and business areas of the city. Taxis are cheap and appear on virtually every corner at almost any time. You can also take the regular (non-busway) public bus, but they are usually slower and less comfortable than the busway. However, it can be a great way to travel with locals and get a real feel of the city. Other options for short destinations are motorbike taxis (Indonesian: ojek) and three-wheeler auto rickshaws (Indonesian: bajaj). They are fast and efficient, but not for everyone, of course. Chauffeur-driven cars with English-speaking guides are strongly recommended for sightseeing.

Wherever you are traveling to around the city, it’s advisable to get your hands on a good map first to plan the best route, and then select a sensible mode of transport to get you there. Take a moment to orientate yourself with this ‘Getting Around in Jakarta’ Guide. It will not only inform you about the options available, but also contains some valuable pointers to look out for. Often, you can use a combination of transport options effectively to reach your destination.

Taxis in Jakarta

jakarta-taxiTaxis are relatively inexpensive and can be found 24 hours a day. The Jakarta city government stresses great importance to the management of taxi services. All taxis must be kept clean, use tamper-proof electronic meters, and shall not refuse to take passengers. Most taxi drivers are reliable and honest, but few will speak anything other than Bahasa Indonesia. In addition to the traditional blue, taxis also come in other colors like bright yellow, white, red, green and even pink.

Taxis can be hailed on the street almost anywhere. Finding a taxi is not a hassle, especially around hotels, shopping malls and other tourist attractions. You can also reserve a taxi by phone. They do not charge extra fees but they usually impose a minimum fare for order by phone. Flagfalls and per km fares vary slightly among operators and depending on the model of vehicle.

Apart from the regular taxis, some operators also provide premium taxi lines. The renowned Blue Bird company, for instance, operates black Mercedes Benz C-Class that can be hired by phone or through their fixed stands in the airport and a few major hotels and malls. Fare is a bit more expensive, but they are more comfortable and the drivers more experienced. They are the favorites among the executives and expats.

If you are interested in hiring a taxi and driver for the day (very useful for multistop sightseeing excursions or day trips beyond the city limits), expect to pay Rp500,000 to Rp1,000,000 for eight hours and 50 mi/80 km round-trip (prices vary depending on taxi operator and model of car). The easiest way to find a car and driver for these types of trips is simply to go to one of the major or more reputable hotels in town and talk to the drivers at the taxi stand. Try to find a driver who understands some English, so you won’t have a problem explaining where you want to go.
