The main attraction in Jakarta Planetarium is a digital dome theater with 320 powered reclining seats. Once the lights in the theater go down, spectator seats will automatically recline so viewers are almost supine, looking up at the 22 meter wide skydome screen onto which images of a starry sky are projected. Throughout the show, visitors take a guided tour across cosmos, study beautiful celestial bodies and travel billions of light-years to the farthest reaches of the universe. Once the visitors get back to earth, they will have a new appreciation for how much the Almighty Creator loves them as they reflect on the seemingly minuscule spot in the universe where God decided to place mankind, His most precious creation.
Each show takes about 30- 45 minutes with titles rotated according to a fixed weekly schedule, show titles include: Journey through the Solar System, Cycle of Stars, the Milky Way, and many more. All shows are in Bahasa Indonesia. Apart from the theater, the Planetarium also has an exhibition hall, a lecture hall and an astronomical observatory.
Jakarta Planetarium is located in Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) complex, Jl. Cikini Raya 73 Jakarta, right in front of Institut Kesenian Jakarta (the Jakarta Arts Institute). TIM itself is the focal point of cultural activities in Jakarta, a massive compound containing a college of arts, four indoor and outdoor theaters, an exhibition hall, two art galleries, an art bookshop and a cineplex (which regularly shows local and foreign independent movies). Information on TIM’s monthly programs can be obtained through hotels and various tourism outlets in Jakarta.
